A 44-year-old transient who was severely beaten at Apollo High School Sunday afternoon by an unknown assailant is in critical condition, police said.
Vernon Ray Stone, who has no known address, was on the campus of the adult continuation school at 3140 School St. between 3 and 4 p.m. Sunday, Simi Valley Police Sgt. Jim Payne said.
“For unknown reasons he was attacked and beaten with a blunt object on the head and body,” Payne said.
Stone was able to walk next door to Station 41 of the Ventura County Fire Department for help, Payne said.
“He was conscious, he was walking, but he was not verbal,” said Fire Department Capt. Bob Stroh, who was working when Stone walked in. “He couldn’t even tell us his name. He seemed to be not with it at all,” Stroh said.
Stone, who has a skull fracture and internal injuries, was taken to Simi Valley Adventist Hospital and later moved to Los Robles Regional Medical Center, Payne said.
Detectives have not yet found anyone who witnessed the beating and Stone is still unable to provide any information.
