After NCAA Tournament Berth, USC’s Raveling Gets New Contract

USC basketball Coach George Raveling, who guided the Trojans to their first NCAA tournament berth since 1985, was rewarded with a contract extension on Tuesday. No details were announced, but Raveling said it was a multiyear deal.

Raveling was in the final year of a five-year contract.

After finishing last three of his first four seasons at USC, Raveling guided the Trojans to a 19-10 overall record and a third-place finish in the Pacific 10 Conference in 1990-91. The Trojans’ season was highlighted by upset victories over Arizona and UCLA. Florida State eliminated USC in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

“This past year we turned a corner in our basketball program, and I’m confident we’ll see continued growth with the foundation George has built here,” USC Athletic Director Mike McGee said in a written statement.

Raveling, 53, has a 278-262 record in 19 seasons as a coach at Washington State, Iowa and USC, where he is 57-88 in five seasons.

“I’m very appreciative of the confidence Mike McGee has displayed in me and my coaching staff,” Raveling said in a written statement. “I’m pleased that I’ll be coaching at USC in the future, and I look forward to following up on the success we had last season.”
