California IN BRIEF : TWENTYNINE PALMS : Gulf War Veteran Killed in Exercise

A Marine who served in the Persian Gulf War was shot and killed while taking part in live-fire training, authorities said. The Marine, Gunnery Sgt. Ronald W. Barry, 32, was pronounced dead at 10:20 a.m. Tuesday at the U. S. Naval Hospital at the Marine Corps Air-Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms. A base spokesman, Capt. Timothy Hoyle, said Barry was shot about 10 a.m. while taking part in the exercise. Barry, a native of Torrance who entered the Marine Corps in April, 1977, had returned to the United States on March 7 after serving at an undisclosed location in the Persian Gulf.
