PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : USDHS Makes Volleyball Final Vs. San Pasqual

University of San Diego High’s Jason Kent had six of his 18 blocks in the clinching fourth game as the Dons defeated San Diego Tuesday at Serra High, 14-16, 15-4, 15-9, 15-7, in the San Diego Section 2-A boys’ volleyball semifinals. The Dons advanced to Friday’s finals against San Pasqual, which defeated Oceanside, 7-15, 10-15, 15-7, 15-3, 15-4.
Kent also had six stuff blocks in the fourth game. After blowing a 14-11 in the first game, USDHS (17-1) stormed back to win the last three. San Diego finshed at 14-2.
San Pasqual (15-3) defeated Oceanside for the third time this season, but had to come back from a 2-0 deficit to do it. The Eagles will meet USDHS at Southwestern College at 5:30 p.m. Oceanside finished at 11-6.
In the 3-A volleyball semifinals at West Hills High, Poway defeated Southwest, 15-8, 14-16, 5-15, 15-13, 15-8. The Titans will meet Mira Mesa or Torrey Pines in Friday’s finals at Southwestern College at 7:30 p.m.
BOYS’ TENNIS
3-A Quarterfinals
Torrey Pines 16, Point Loma 2--Top-seeded Torrey Pines (17-2) easily advanced to today’s semifinals against Mira Mesa. Point Loma finished at 14-6.
Mira Mesa 14, Orange Glen 4--Winning three sets for No. 4 Mira Mesa (21-1) were Ryan Connor in singles and Jeff Tarlton and Nader Izadi in doubles.
Poway 11, Patrick Henry 7--Jerry Miyamoto, seeded first in the individual singles tournament, won all three of his singles matches for Patrick Henry (11-5), but it was not enough to overcome Poway’s dominance in doubles. After losing six of nine singles matches, the Titans (14-6) won eight of nine doubles matches.
Mt. Carmel 13, San Dieguito 5--The Sundevils (14-6) breezed through to the semifinals behind the singles play of George Lobb and Brian Pilsbury, who swept all three of their matches. Mt. Carmel’s top doubles team of Ian Brisbane and Matt Mohel also went undefeated. Mt. Carmel will host Poway today at 3 p.m.
2-A Quarterfinals
La Jolla 17, Valhalla 1--Top-seeded La Jolla (15-2) was almost perfect in advancing to today’s semifinals against La Jolla Country Day. Valhalla finished at 14-4.
La Jolla Country Day 12, Coronado 6--John Chang and Greg Savidge each won three singles sets for the No. 4 Torres (21-2). Andy Grimaud and John Wadley won three doubles sets for Coronado (15-7).
San Pasqual 15, Bishop’s 3--Third-seeded San Pasqual (21-3) had little trouble reaching today’s semifinals. The Eagles will play second-seeded University of San Diego High. Bishop’s ended the season at 13-7.
University of San Diego High 12, University City 6--USDHS (18-3) had a struggle, but advanced to today’s semifinals. University City finished at 10-8.
BADMINTON
Top-seeded Somsack Monsavath of San Diego advanced to the semifinals of the San Diego Section boys’ singles tournament at the Federal Building in Balboa Park with a 15-5, 15-7 victory over sixth-seeded Quok Liang of Mission Bay.
No. 2 Tho Thai of Crawford, No. 4 Hoang Nguyen of Mission Bay and unseeded Hung Tran of Mira Mesa also advanced.
All four seeded players--Sombath Vilitchai of San Diego, Phung Hua of Hoover, Linh Truong of Hoover and Lisa Syvilay of Serra--advanced to the girls’ semifinals.
In the second round of boys’ doubles play, No. 1-seeded Le Huynh and Thinh Nguyen of Hoover defeated Adil Karim and Eli Gordon of Point Loma, 15-9, 15-7 to advance. No. 2 Kuong Chea and Tho Thai of Crawford and No. 4 Eric Lee and Tomiei Kuwa of University City also advanced.
