The New York Knicks are expected to hire their new coach within a week, and Pat Riley, whose winning percentage with the Lakers is the best of any coach in NBA history, is the No. 1 candidate.
Riley compiled a 533-194 (.733) record and won four league championships in nine seasons with the Lakers.
The other candidates for the vacancy created when John MacLeod resigned to take the coaching job at Notre Dame are Knick assistant Paul Silas, former Chicago Bull coach Doug Collins and University of Texas Coach Tom Penders.
A source close to Riley told The Times that Riley wants control over trades and personnel decisions and a salary exceeding $1.5 million.
Riley has acknowledged pursuing the job.
“Yes, I want it,” Riley was quoted as saying in Tuesday’s New York Post. “I’m not playing any kind of games here.”
Riley left the Lakers after last season and joined NBC as an NBA analyst.
