Canyon 5, Gahr 1--Matt Wood pitched a complete game for the Comanches (17-9-1), striking out nine. Canyon collected five hits, three of them doubles, against three Gahr pitchers.
In the first inning, Canyon’s Rory O’Leary had a line-drive single, then stole second and third. Jeff Brunswig was walked. O’Leary stole home on a pickoff attempt. Center fielder Eric Rosales dropped a fly ball off the bat of Greg Tippin, who wound up on third with Brunswig scoring.
Wood doubled to left in the second inning and Brian Jalowiec was inserted as a pinch-runner. Matt Kastelic’s doubled him in to give Canyon a 3-0 lead.
Gahr (18-7) scored in the third, when Chris Kissling and Larry Seigler hit back-to-back ground-rule doubles.
In the fifth, Canyon added to its lead. Ryan Puskas singled to right, then stole second. Wood was intentionally walked, and designated hitter Royce Valent’s fly ball bounced in front of Rosales, scoring Puskas and Wood.
Canyon (17-9-1) plays Dos Pueblos (17-8) in the quarterfinals Friday.
