Long Beach : Senior Apartment Project OKd After 5 Years of Talks

After more than five years of planning and negotiation, a $5-million, 75-unit senior citizen housing development has been approved by the Long Beach Planning Commission.
The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development originally awarded funds for the project in 1986, but commission members vetoed the development after raising concerns about resident security.
The new seven-story design, including a first habitable floor of more than nine feet above grade, instead of the prior four-foot elevation, was recently approved by HUD for financing, then met with unanimous approval from the commission.
“To the city’s credit, they’ve been willing to talk with HUD directly,” explained Diana McIver, a Volunteers of America representative from Austin, Tex., who appeared before the commission to lend support for the development.
