Downey : Green Waste Recycling Test to Last Another 6 Months
- Share via
The Downey City Council has voted to extend a pilot recycling program for another six months.
Under the program, residents separate grass clippings, leaves and other organic waste from the rest of their garbage. The green waste is kept separate when picked up by the city’s trash hauler, Calsan Inc.
The project is one method Downey is using to comply with a state law that requires all cities to reduce their contributions to landfills by 25% by 1995.
About 10% of Downey residences, or 1,800 homes, are participating in the project, which was started last summer.
Assistant City Manager Ken Farfsing said officials hope to involve the entire city in the future.
