BASEBALL : DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Strawberry Already Seeing Red

The emotions are already being turned up for this weekend’s Dodger-Red series at Cincinnati. It will be the first time these teams will meet this season, the beginning of what is certain to be a bitter 18-game series.

“I can’t wait, it’s going to be seriously intense, they are going to be coming hard after us,” Darryl Strawberry said. “This is when you see who can rise to the top.”

Strawberry has already felt the heat from this rivalry when he was hit by a pitch from Norm Charlton in the first inning of the final exhibition game between these two teams April 1. In the second inning, Dodger pitcher Tim Belcher hit Eric Davis.

Charlton will start Saturday, and Strawberry said he is ready for him.

“Charlton doesn’t fool me with that macho-man stuff,” Strawberry said. “He threw at me in spring training, and I warned him then. I gave him a couple of looks like, ‘You better not try that stuff with me during the season, buddy.’ ”

“This is going to be a battle,” said Kevin Gross, who will face Charlton. “This series will be played the way baseball should be played.”
