Mark Martin won the pole for the Coca-Cola 600 by being the fastest of four drivers to break the year-old event record at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway.
Martin, struggling to regain the consistent form that left him a close second in the 1990 points standings, had a top lap of 174.820 m.p.h. in his Ford Thunderbird. Ken Schrader, Michael Waltrip and Sterling Marlin also broke the old record.
