Ward Leads Woodbridge Past Ramona

Allison Ward hit two run-scoring singles and was the winning pitcher as Woodbridge defeated Ramona, 4-2, in 10 innings in a Southern Section 3-A second-round softball game at Ramona High School Wednesday.
Woodbridge (22-6) played errorless defense and took advantage of two Ramona errors to score two runs. The Warriors will play Don Lugo in the quarterfinals Friday.
The score was tied, 2-2, in top of the 10th inning when Teresa Dunn singled, went to second on a ground out, and scored when Ann Marie Risquez reach on an error. Risquez went to second and scored when Ward singled.
Woodbridge scored twice in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. Dunn reached on a bunt single and went to second on a sacrifice. Risquez grounded to the shortstop, who overthrew third in an attempt to throw out Dunn. Dunn scored and Risquez took second on the error, and Risquez then scored on Ward’s single.
Ramona tied the score on a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh.
Ward (12-5) picked up the victory by pitching 3 2/3 innings of hitless relief, striking out six and walking none. Ward moved to the mound from left field in relief of starter Stacy Washington.
In the Small Schools’ division:
Hamilton 5, St. Margaret’s 0--Hamilton scored four runs on four errors in the first inning to defeat visiting St. Margaret’s. Colette McLaughlin (9-2) pitched a three-hitter, had eights strikeouts, walked three and only allowed one earned run for St. Margaret’s (13-3). Second baseman Ale Chase and center fielder Samantha Ruh each had defensive plays that prevented Hamilton from scoring more runs.
