TENNIS ROUNDUP : Leach-Pugh Doubles Team Fails U.S. Again in Team Cup

The United States lost the decisive doubles for the second time in as many matches and was beaten in the World Team Cup on Thursday, this time by Switzerland.

Jakob Hlasek put the Swiss ahead in the clay-court competition at Dusseldorf, Germany, by defeating Brad Gilbert, 6-0, 6-4. Aaron Krickstein then beat Marc Rosset, 6-3, 6-2.

Hlasek and Rosset then teamed for a come-from-behind victory over Jim Pugh and Rick Leach, 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).

In the other Blue Group match, Yugoslavia defeated Germany, 2-1.

Goran Prpic defeated Eric Jelen, 6-4, 6-2, after German Michael Stich beat Goran Ivanisevic, 6-3, 6-4.

But Ivanisevic joined Slobodan Zivojinovic to defeat Stich and Udo Riglewski, 6-3, 6-7 (7-5), 7-5, to gain a point in the standings.

Eduardo Masso of Argentina and Jan Gunnarsson of Sweden moved into the quarterfinals of the $225,000 Assn. of Tennis Professionals tournament at Bologna, Italy, along with Luiz Mattar of Brazil and Omar Camporese of Italy.

Masso, who defeated fifth-seeded Francisco Clavet of Spain in the opening round, won when South Africa’s Wayne Ferreira withdrew after becoming ill with the second set tied, 3-3. Masso won the first set, 7-6 (7-5).

Gunnarsson, who upset fourth-seeded Richard Fromberg on Tuesday, easily defeated Francesco Cancellotti of Italy, 6-2, 6-0. Mattar beat Pedro Rebolledo of Chile, 7-5, 6-3, and Camporese defeated Joao Cunha-Silba of Portugal, 6-2, 6-3.

Shaun Stafford, the 1988 NCAA champion from Florida, upset eighth-seeded Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria, 6-4, 6-3, to reach the quarterfinals of the $150,000 European Open at Geneva, Switzerland.

Tami Whitlinger defeated Katja Piccolini of Italy, 6-3, 6-2, but sixth-seeded Marianne Werdel lost to Japan’s Maya Kidowaki, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Top-seeded Judith Wiesner of Austria moved into the second round of a $150,000 tournament at Strasbourg, France, with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Veronika Martinek of Germany.
