Goodwill Industries of Ventura and Santa Barbara counties offers free training and job-placement services for those interested in general office work, including word processing, data entry, reception and secretarial. People with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply.
Students are enrolled in the classes--which are limited to about 20--after they have undergone a series of tests to assess their specific needs, unit director Robert Dyer said.
The classes are an opportunity to learn real-world skills, Dyer said. “We treat this training just as if it were the workplace,” he said. “It’s no free lunch.”
This is Goodwill Industries’ third year offering the program. Students can expect either a 13- or 30-week commitment, depending on their needs and abilities, Dyer said.
During the courses, students will learn to operate a computer, as well as word processing and spreadsheet software.
There is also instruction in writing cover letters and resumes and preparing for job interviews.
After completion of the course, 70% to 80% of students find jobs, Dyer said.
“We don’t offer a guarantee, but our goal is not just to teach them Word Perfect, but to teach them the program so they can get out and back into society,” he said.
