GLENDALE : Used-Book Sale to Benefit Library

The Glendale library’s book budget is about half of what it was before it fell victim to the city’s budget-cutting ax a few years ago, but a group of volunteers is organizing a fund-raiser to help restock some of the bare bookshelves.
The Friends of the Glendale Public Library is asking avid readers to give up their unwanted books and magazines for a book sale on March 25. Proceeds will supplement the book budget, which was cut from about $400,000 to $200,000 three years ago and has remained at that level ever since, said Katherine Yamada, a member of the group’s board of directors.
“People are aware that the library needs help,” Yamada said.
The group recently sent out mailers asking the public for modest donations, but many people “have been responding quite generously,” she said.
The book sale will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the library’s auditorium.
Book donations can be dropped off at all Glendale elementary schools, libraries and post offices through March 11. Books can also be dropped off at the Vons supermarkets on North Glendale Avenue and on Verdugo Boulevard in Montrose, and the Ralphs market on North Central Avenue, organizers said.
