The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday voted to overhaul the menu served visitors at Los Angeles International Airport, hoping a new fare of ethnic and popular foods will net $3.4 million in additional yearly revenue.
On a unanimous vote, the lawmakers authorized contracts with seven new food and beverage providers and agreed to a redesign of LAX’s aging Theme Restaurant with the help of Disney Co.
The new concessionaires--McDonald’s, Andy Camacho, Creative Croissants, Hamada, Sushi Boy, Eruotal and CA One Services--are expected to invest nearly $11 million developing their facilities and gross $34.6 million in revenues.
Under the food plan, expected to be in place by early 1996, McDonald’s will have five outlets at the airport while food guru Wolfgang Puck will offer his signature pizzas in Terminal 2 and the popular Daily Grill restaurant and Rhino Chasers micro-brewery will have one outlet each. Other firms will offer Mexican, Chinese and Japanese cuisine.
Host International Inc. has had the exclusive food and beverage contract at the airport since 1978. Still up for grabs is the contract for one firm to operate 23 other food and beverage outlets in the huge airport and a smaller contract to operate another five service sites.
