Edith B. Airey, a seven-decade Ventura resident, has died following a brief illness. She was 96.
Born in Blackwell, Okla., Airey was briefly a schoolteacher before coming to California and settling in Ventura with her husband, James Lowery Airey, in 1922. Her husband died in 1964.
“Her family was her life,” said her son, Milton Airey, of Ventura. “She was briefly a teacher, but she really seemed to enjoy being a homemaker and seeing the kids grow up. She saw a lot of history in her life. She was a great mom.”
Airey died Saturday at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard.
In addition to her son, she is survived by five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Carpinteria Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Ted Mayr Funeral Home, Ventura.
