2 Brawls Break Out at Pitchess Honor Rancho

CASTAIC — Thirty-one inmates and several sheriff’s deputies were injured after two fights broke out at the Peter J. Pitchess Honor Rancho, authorities said Monday.
The brawls were the latest in a long-running series of racially tinged fights between African American and Latino prisoners at the facility.
The first brawl erupted about 2:30 p.m. Sunday, when about 250 inmates began fighting in a minimum-security facility, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Mark Bailey said. Order was restored 10 minutes later, after deputies used pepper spray, sting-ball grenades and other measures to quell the dispute.
Deputies’ verbal commands ended a second melee that broke out about 8 p.m. among 50 inmates, Bailey said.
Injuries ranged from cuts to broken bones.
