EU Agrees to Strengthen Ties With Mexico: The European Commission agreed on a strategy for establishing closer economic, political and commercial relations between the European Union and Mexico. “This agreement responds to the economic and political evolution of Mexico over the last years, including recent developments,” the commission said in a statement after its weekly meeting adjourned. The strategy paper the meeting produced emphasized that it was not intended as a mandate for negotiating the surreptitious formation of a free-trade area between the EU and Mexico, which last year signed the North American Free Trade Agreement with the United States.
