REGION : Whittier to Sell Surplus Water to Pico Rivera

The Whittier City Council has tentatively agreed to sell a portion of its surplus water supplies to neighboring Pico Rivera.
Whittier will sell about 300 acre-feet of water this year--enough for 600 families of four--under an agreement that would be renegotiated every year, said City Manager Tom Mauk. Whittier, which has a projected water surplus of 800 acre-feet this year, is expected to receive about $94,500 from the sale.
Pico Rivera will save $23,000 by purchasing extra water from Whittier instead of the state Water Replenishment District, which would have charged $78 more per acre-foot. Pico Rivera is allocated about 5,600 acre-feet of water each year, but the city has usually needed 100 to 300 additional acre-feet.
