MONTEBELLO : Teachers Vote to Strike if District Cuts Their Pay
- Share via
Angered by months of unsuccessful contract talks, Montebello teachers on Friday voted to strike if the financially strapped school district goes through with plans to slash their pay by 5.3%.
Nearly 91% of the 1,226 Montebello Teachers Assn. members who cast ballots voted for a walkout, union leaders said. More negotiations are scheduled for the weekend. If talks fail to produce a settlement, district officials say, they will impose a pay cut by March 1.
Hundreds of parents and teachers packed a school board meeting Thursday night to protest the cuts and urged the district to look elsewhere. Some board members said they sympathized with the teachers but have no other alternatives to balance the budget.
