Weekend Weather Fine for Beaches, but Water Is Risky

Clear skies and summer-like temperatures are expected to draw tens of thousands of visitors to Orange County’s beaches over the Presidents’ Day holiday weekend.
“We are expecting a pretty good crowd,” said Lt. Steve Davidson, a Huntington Beach lifeguard. “The weather should bring in more people than usual to the beaches.”
However, officials are asking beach-goers to contact lifeguards before going into the water this weekend. The recent spate of storms have shifted underwater sands, creating the potential for strong riptides, Davidson said. Also, he said: “The water is still very cold, and that gives you an increased fatigue factor.”
Weather forecasters are predicting temperatures will climb into the high 70s and low 80s throughout Orange County today through Monday.
The normal high temperature for this time of year is about 69 degrees, weather officials said.
