SOUTHERN SECTION BOYS’ BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : DIVISION I-A ROUNDUP : Fountain Valley Manages to Stay Alive

Fountain Valley, playing without two starters for a third consecutive game, stayed alive in the Southern Section Division I-A boys’ basketball playoffs with a 64-53 victory over Canyon Country Canyon Friday.
The Barons (19-7), who are without Dan Keller (broken foot) and Mike Arvesen (illness), trailed by one point entering the fourth quarter, but outscored Canyon, 19-8.
Paul Tayyar had 24 points and Phil Domingo 22 for Fountain Valley, which will play Corona next Friday in the quarterfinals.
Greg Minor scored 31 points for Canyon (16-11).

In Division I-A:
Mater Dei 86, Cerritos 36--Schea Cotton had 28 points and 11 rebounds as Mater Dei (29-1) routed Cerritos (12-15).
The Monarchs, the top-seeded team, wasted little time, taking a 19-5 first-quarter lead and went on to win their 16 consecutive section playoff game.
Shaun Jackson scored 22 points and Clay McKnight 17 for Mater Dei, which plays Palmdale Highland in the quarterfinals.
