CANOGA PARK : Youngsters to Query Astronauts Via Radio

Using ham radios, youngsters at Canoga Park School will have the chance to ask questions such as “What’s it like to eat your food in space?” to astronauts orbiting the Earth in the space shuttle Endeavour.

Their teacher, Doreen Aghajanian, herself a licensed amateur radio operator, is preparing the first- through fifth-graders for the event.

The children have been studying astronomy and life sciences, and have been asked to come up with a series of questions that they will ask the astronauts using a radio relay system.

Canoga Park is one of 26 schools worldwide that will participate in the Space Shuttle Amateur Radio Experiment, sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the American Radio Relay League and the Amateur Satellite Corp.

Each school will have about 10 minutes to talk with the astronauts, Aghajanian said.

In addition to the radio relay, the students will also use a radio station provided by the San Fernando Valley Amateur Radio Club to send computer messages to the Russian space station Mir.

Aghajanian said her students are also being trained for their ham licenses and will use the radio to contact other children around the world.
