They are the secret weapons of the Police Department. They are the eyes and ears not only for police, but for residents too.
They are the Huntington Beach Retired Senior Volunteer force, which recently completed its first year of service.
The 44 volunteers averaged more than 1,800 staff hours per month, which is the equivalent of about 10 full-time employees.
The seniors carry out a variety of functions, from removing signs on public and private property to assisting the public.
City leaders and police officials have hailed the efforts of the volunteer force.

Local business owners can receive tips on getting the most out of government programs at a seminar of the Industrial Round Table in Garden Grove.
Judy Jarvis, regional director of the state’s Trade and Commerce Agency, will lead the noon seminar. Jarvis, who formerly owned a small business herself, will outline ways the agency can help establish contacts with businesses in Pacific Rim countries.
The seminar costs $25 and is sponsored by the Garden Grove Chamber of Commerce.
