NHL ROUNDUP : Ciccarelli Helps Detroit Beat Toronto Again, 4-1
- Share via
If Dino Ciccarelli hasn’t put an end to trade rumors, the Detroit Red Wing right wing certainly has increased his market value.
Ciccarelli, benched earlier this season, scored his sixth goal and added an assist Wednesday night in the Red Wings’ 4-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs at Detroit.
“I know I can still play, and I will play somewhere,” Ciccarelli said. “I have to prove myself again, but I’m taking this as a challenge. I thrive on these situations.”
Ciccarelli and Shawn Burr scored goals early in the second period as the Red Wings increased their winning streak to four games with their second victory in three nights over the Maple Leafs.
“This is an important win, because they’ve had our number, and because it puts some space between us in the standings,” Ciccarelli said. “We have a lot of depth on this team, and it is paying off for us now.”
The Red Wings lead the Central Division with 23 points.
Edmonton 2, Dallas 1--Todd Marchant scored with 1:09 to play and Mike Stapleton added a power-play goal with 36 seconds left, lifting the Oilers at Edmonton.
Stapleton’s goal was the Oilers’ first in 35 power-play opportunities.
St. Louis 4, San Jose 3--Greg Gilbert scored his second goal of the game with 1:24 to play, lifting the Blues at St. Louis.
Patrice Tardif assisted on all four St. Louis goals, and Ian Laperriere added two goals and an assist for the Blues, who squandered a 3-0 third-period lead.
Winnipeg 4, Vancouver 1--Darrin Shannon scored two goals and goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin made 45 saves for the Jets at Vancouver.
Hartford 3, Boston 2--Darren Turcotte scored with 2:01 to play in overtime at Hartford, Conn.
New York Islanders 3, Buffalo 3--Brad Dalgarno scored with 11:30 to play in the third period as the Islanders rallied from a 2-0 deficit at Buffalo, N.Y.
NHL Notes
The Chicago Blackhawks traded wingers Rich Sutter and Paul Ysebaert to the Tampa Bay Lightning for winger Jim Cummins and defensemen Jeff Buchanan and Tom Tilley. . . . Pat LaFontaine of the Buffalo Sabres, sidelined for more than a year because of knee problems, will begin practicing with the Sabres on March 6 and will be re-evaluated then to see if he is ready for games. He has been sidelined since November 1993.
