Neighbors Campaign to Save Amber Trees
The liquid amber trees that cover the quaint Southwood Riviera neighborhood of Torrance were just beginning to sprout green leaves when Joan Denslow moved into the seaside community 34 years ago.
Now, the city is planning to remove one-third of the leafy ambers to repair the sidewalks and curbs. Residents are fighting the tree removal, which they say will decrease property values and ruin the neighborhood’s landscape.
Denslow and neighbor Debra House have started a campaign to save the trees, urging residents to call City Hall, which is allowing some residents to save the tall, flowing trees planted in front of their homes.
