The entire Long Beach State men’s team, in a closed-door meeting with senior school athletic officials, endorsed assistant Clyde Vaughan for the 49ers’ vacant head coaching position.
Players expressed their displeasure over what officials said will likely be at least a three-week search process to replace Seth Greenberg, who has accepted the University of South Florida job.
The players also said they are upset and confused by what they perceive as the school’s poor treatment of Vaughan, a Long Beach assistant for four seasons. The players would like Vaughan to be quickly appointed to the position.
Interim athletic director Bill Shumard, who attended the meeting, said it was productive.
“The players really like Clyde, and they certainly let their feelings be known,” Shumard said.
