San Gabriel Valley : SEATING CHANGES

The prized box seats at the San Gabriel Auditorium are not what they used to be.
Time has taken its toll on the original wicker chairs from 1927 and the City Council on Tuesday approved plans to replace them.
“Surprisingly enough, we still have the original chairs. However, they are now in a state of deterioration and decay, and finally must be replaced,” said Bill Shaw, auditorium manager.
Patrons who contribute to the campaign for the chairs will be honored in placards outside each box, he said.
Most of the chairs in the 1,438-seat theater were replaced in 1945. But Shaw said those too will need replacement.
