* Update: Santa Ana Valley wasn’t exactly a tough opener, but the Monarchs’ 56-0 victory shows their strength. Touted receiver Rod Perry returned from last season’s knee injury and had a touchdown reception.

2. LA PUENTE BISHOP AMAT, 1-0 (2)

* Next: Friday vs. No. 12 Redlands

* Update: The Lancers defeated Carson, 14-6, in last season’s opener on their way to a Southern Section title. After routing the Colts, 39-14, in last week’s rematch, Bishop Amat appears poised for another title run.

3. LOYOLA, 1-0 (3)

* Next: Saturday vs. Mira Costa at Glendale High

* Update: The Cubs’ running backs proved mighty in a 48-7 victory over Hawthorne. Junior Jose Mendoza rushed for 111 yards and two touchdowns.

4. NEWHALL HART, 1-0 (5)

* Next: Friday vs. Thousand Oaks at Coll. of Canyons

* Update: The Indians’ newest quarterback prodigy, Travis Carroll, passed for 275 yards and two touchdowns as Hart defeated Granada Hills, 45-14.

5. MISSION VIEJO CAPISTRANO VALLEY, 1-0 (6)

* Next: Friday at Edison

* Update: The Cougars were idle the last two weeks after defeating Nanakuli High of Hawaii, 42-21, on a lengthy trip on Aug. 30.

6. PALOS VERDES PENINSULA, 1-0 (7)

* Next: Friday vs. No. 18 Narbonne at Gardena High

* Update: The Panthers didn’t show much offensive versatility in their 38-15 win over Lakewood. They passed only twice, but one was a 34-yard touchdown.

7. LOS ALAMITOS, 1-0 (12)

* Next: Tonight vs. Washington at Veterans Stadium

* Update: Despite losing 17 starters from last year’s team, the Griffins opened the season with a 42-0 victory over Cypress.

8. LONG BEACH POLY, 0-1 (8)

* Next: Friday vs. Wilm. Banning at Veterans Stadium

* Update: The Jackrabbits had a bye last week, which they needed after being upset by Las Vegas Green Valley, 16-10, in their opener on Sept. 6.

9. LANCASTER ANTELOPE VALLEY, 1-0 (9)

* Next: Friday at Barstow

* Update: The Antelopes weren’t tested in a 52-0 victory over M.E. Lazerete High of Edmonton, Canada. They scored 31 points in the first quarter and finished with 345 rushing yards.

10. COMPTON DOMINGUEZ, 1-0 (14)

* Next: Friday vs. Eisenhower

* Update: The Dons’ 78-0 victory over Compton shows there’s no love lost between these neighborhood schools. Jason Thomas rushed for three touchdowns, passed for two and had two interceptions.

11. ANAHEIM SERVITE, 1-0 (17)

* Next: Friday vs. Irvine at Cal State Fullerton

* Update: The Friars’ 24-20 victory over Esperanza may have been a costly one. Quarterback Greg Cicero injured his right (throwing) hand and is being examined for possible ligament damage.

12. REDLANDS, 1-0 (16)

* Next: Friday at No. 2 Bishop Amat

* Update: The Terriers’ push to be considered among the top teams in the Southern Section got off to a good start with a 35-6 victory over Yucaipa.

13. BELLFLOWER ST. JOHN BOSCO, 0-0-1 (13)

* Next: Friday vs. San Diego Grossmont

* Update: The Braves’ comeback fell short in 13-13 tie with Eisenhower. DeAndre O’Neal scored the tying touchdown on a 75-yard run midway through the fourth quarter, but they missed the extra point.

* Next: Friday at Fresno Clovis West

* Update: The Steelers didn’t live up to preseason expectations in their opener, struggling to a 3-3 tie against Canyon Springs. Trevor Malensek’s 27-yard field goal with 3:24 left tied the game.

15. SHERMAN OAKS NOTRE DAME, 1-0 (NR)

* Next: Friday at Burbank Burroughs

* Update: The Knights’ 41-7 victory over Mission Hills Alemany was the most points they have scored in an opener during Coach Kevin Rooney’s 17-year tenure.

16. RIVERSIDE RUBIDOUX, 1-0 (NR)

* Next: Friday vs. Valley View

* Update: The Falcons extended San Gorgonio’s losing streak to 12 games with a 46-0 victory in the opener.

17. WOODLAND HILLS TAFT, 1-0 (NR)

* Next: Friday vs. Fairfax

* Update: The Toreadors have slowly been making a name for themselves among the top teams in the City Section, and their 30-6 upset victory over Sylmar last week makes them a legitimate title contender.

18. HARBOR CITY NARBONNE, 1-0 (20)

* Next: Friday vs. No. 6 Peninsula at Gardena High

* Update: The Gauchos’ offense picked up where it left off last season in a 46-6 victory over Los Angeles Jordan. Austin Uku rushed for 136 yards in nine carries and scored touchdowns on runs of 45, 24 and 23 yards.

19. CHINO HILLS AYALA, 1-0 (19)

* Next: Friday vs. Esperanza at Chino High

* Update: Despite three fumbles and 108 yards in penalties, the Bulldogs rallied for a 37-34 victory over Pomona Ganesha.

20. NORCO, 1-0 (NR)

* Next: Friday vs. Riverside Arlington

* Update: In a rematch of last year’s first-round Southern Section Division IV playoff game, the Cougars routed Riverside Poly, 50-7. The result is not surprising since Norco is 26-1 in season openers under Coach Gary Campbell.

* DROPPED OUT: No. 10 Sylmar (0-1), lost to Taft, 30-6; No. 11 Esperanza (0-1), lost to Servite, 24-20; No. 15 J.W. North (0-1), lost to Long Beach Jordan, 14-7; No. 18 Hawthorne (0-1), lost to Loyola, 48-7.
