Couple Face Murder, Child Abuse Charges

Two Anaheim residents were charged with felony murder and child abuse after a 14-month-old baby girl brought to a hospital in serious condition later died, police said Monday.
Nurses at Anaheim Memorial Hospital called police last Thursday when Victor Trujillo Vargas arrived at the emergency room with the infant and sought treatment.
After the baby died, an autopsy revealed that it had suffered “blunt force trauma to the abdomen causing internal injuries,” according to Lt. Ted Labahn.
Vargas, 24, and Norma Mora Mancilla, 18, were questioned Thursday by police. After questioning, police released Mancilla but took Vargas to court on a probation violation charge from an unrelated matter.
Police also took two other children--the baby’s twin sister and a 3-year-old sister--from a home the couple apparently shared and put them into protective custody.
Police didn’t release information about the incident last week, waiting instead until autopsy results were known.
Police then arrested the couple on murder and child abuse charges and booked the pair into the Anaheim City Jail.
The investigation into the infant’s death continues.
