Coach Larry Robinson is known to tinker with the Kings’ lines from time to time, but he had second thoughts about some changes he made only hours before their 5-3 loss to Pittsburgh on Tuesday.
“It’s kind of tough to throw [players] together who haven’t been together in a while. . . . The chemistry wasn’t there,” said Robinson, who several times had Dan Bylsma teamed with veterans Eddie Olczyk and Ray Ferraro instead of his normal linemates, Ian Laperriere and Matt Johnson. ‘I think Bylsma tried to do a little more instead of trying to play his regular game like he’s used to playing with Lappy and them.”

Left wing Craig Johnson had abdominal surgery Wednesday at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. Johnson will be out for as long as 12 weeks. . . . Defenseman Doug Zmolek, who sat out Tuesday’s game because of a right shoulder strain, has been downgraded to week to week. . . . Defenseman Jan Vopat, who also has been sidelined because of a back injury, will start contact drills with the team this weekend.
